The old Hanseatic town of Dortmund is located in the heart of the Ruhr. It was once noted for its production of iron, steel, mining machinery and beer. In recent years, it has become the focus of service and commerce for the Westphalia region. Reflecting Dortmund's importance as one of Germany's main beer producers, the Brewery Museum traces the history of beer making from the middle of the nineteenth century. Recovery from the devastation of World War II began in earnest after 1945, when 93% of the city centre was destroyed. Restored after the war, the Priory Church contains a triptych by Derek and Jan Baegert.
