Renowned as a venue for international trade fairs, Hannover is also a city of historical and cultural importance. The city centre is structured to allow free flow of traffic and the shopping area is pedestrianised.

Modern architecture sits in complete harmony with historic landmarks such as the Herrenhäuser Gärten (Herrenhausen Gardens) in the northwest of the city. This development was started in the seventeenth century and the Herrenhäuser Allee is an avenue of lime trees that links its four uniquely different gardens. The Grosser Garten is Europe's only baroque garden to survive in its original form. The central fountain in the garden sends a jet of water 82 metres (269 feet) into the air. The Berggarten houses the largest collection of orchids on the continent. By following Der Roten Faden ('The Red Line'), a 4.2-kilometre line marked on the pavement, visitors are guided to 36 of Hannover's most interesting sights. The Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) is a neoclassical opera house, ranked in the world's top 20. In complete contrast, the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) has a unique diagonal lift that delivers visitors to the dome at the top of the building, for a view out over the city.

Hannover is also famous for its open-air art collection. Guided walking art tours showcase Niki de Saint-Phalle's 'Nana' sculptures and famous designer bus stops. Several museums complete the cultural picture; these include the Sprengel Museum of twentieth-century art, located near the Maschsee, the Kestner Museum, the Museum of Lower Saxony, and the Wilhelm Busch Museum which is devoted to the creator of the strip cartoon.
